What I like best about working at SPIN is helping the people I support solve problems, learn new things, or create something meaningful in their lives sometimes all at once.

My name is Jen, and I’ve worked at SPIN for 27 years.

What I like best about working at SPIN is helping the people I support solve problems, learn new things, or create something meaningful in their lives sometimes all at once. Whether it’s explaining a complex topic in plain terms, helping with making a tough decision or just making someone’s day easier. Being useful in a concrete way is the most satisfying part.

One time that stands out to me was when I helped a person I support prepare for job interviews. She was incredibly nervous and lacked confidence. She had been turned down for several other jobs. I worked with her and her Job Coach before every interview. Practicing what to say and role-playing different scenarios. Helping her pick out appropriate clothes to wear. On the day of her interviews, we would talk on the way there to get her confidence up. She now comes out smiling after her interviews showing me that she did a great job. And a week later landed one of the jobs.

Seeing how proud the people I support are of themselves, and knowing I played a part in helping them reach that goal, made me incredibly proud to be a DSP. It reminded me that what we do every day encouraging independence, building skills, and celebrating progress really does change lives. All these moments reinforce why I love working here at SPIN.
